Press Release: Women for Nature

Sharolyn Mathieu Vettese, President of SMV Energy Solutions is featured in new report on biodiversity conservation

Cambridge, ON (February 25, 2019) — How can Canadians be better motivated at taking action to protect biodiversity?

A group of 20 prominent Canadian women in science and conservation are answering this question in a new report released today which calls for action by all Canadians to reverse critical species loss. The group was composed of experts from Nature Canada’s Women for Nature initiative, including Sharolyn Mathieu Vettese who shared her thoughts on the biodiversity crisis, and how best to engage Canadians.

“Just like Canadians are seeing the value of having a diverse and integrated workforce, the same value applies to Nature, but on a much larger integrated scale. For Canadians to stop destroying our natural capital until it is all gone, we have to engage governments, businesses, and consumers to take action by showing them that preserving our natural capital is far cheaper and better than dealing with a collapse of our way of life, “said Sharolyn Mathieu Vettese.

Biodiversity Conservation: A Call for Action for Canadian Decision-Makers argues that for many Canadians, a loss of species is hard to notice if you don’t know the different plants or animals in your own backyard.

The bilingual report suggests new strategies for teaching Canadians about nature; designing cities with natural connections; and using new technology and the arts to talk about protecting our lands, waters, and wildlife.  The report also includes bold asks for policy makers such as the creation of new protected areas, more partnerships with Indigenous peoples, and the enforcement of species at risk legislation.

“The latest evidence on biodiversity loss worldwide makes it clear that we must act now to avoid unimaginable natural poverty,” said Women for Nature co-chair Ann Dale. “There is no second chance from extinction. Can you imagine Canada without polar bears or loons? This action agenda is our chance to make a difference,” she said.

“The report is a great example of the kind of conversations that happen when we bring together people who are passionate, knowledgeable and want to make a difference. I’m very proud to be a part of that discussion. Canadians need nature, and nature needs us,” added Senator Diane Griffin.

CHANGING THE CONVERSATION & NATURE CANADA PRESENT:

From the local to the global
Biodiversity Conversation Series:
How important are the common loon and polar bears to Canadians?

November 28th, 2017

The second e-dialogue from the Biodiversity Conversations: How important are the common loon and polar bears to Canadians? series will use the monarch butterfly to illuminate the local to global interdependencies of biodiversity conservation. We hope to reveal the dynamic interconnections and the need for global governance systems essential to protecting critical habitats and migratory paths. Biodiversity, like climate change, does not respect political borders and requires a broader systems approach for its conservation.

SMV Energy Solutions Buys and Sells Ontario GHG Allowances

Cambridge, ON, September 5, 2017: SMV Energy Solutions is pleased to offer its services to participants in the Ontario Cap and Trade program to buy and sell greenhouse gas (GHG) allowances on a confidential basis starting with the 2017, and 2020 vintage years. SMV Energy Solutions is a market participant in the Ontario Cap and Trade Program.

Participants in the program must regulate their greenhouse gas emissions for the 2017 year with emissions allowances. The program provides most participants with free allowances on February 1st. Additional allowances can be bought at the Ontario scheduled auctions (the third auction is on September 6th, and the fourth is on November 29, 2017), and also participants can trade allowances between themselves by using the services of a market participant at any time.

For participants that have a surplus of allowances, trading their excess allowances provides a cash infusion. This is the only option to sell their allowances. Selling at market also ensures the best price.

Participants can trade (buy, or sell) allowances over-the-counter at any time. There is no fixed schedule, fewer mandatory requirements than buying at the Ontario auction, and greater certainty of success. Trading is the easier option.

As a market participant, SMV Energy Solutions facilitates the buying and selling between Ontario’s Cap and Trade program participants with the upmost confidentiality. Contact us for details.

Ontario Cap and Trade‘s First Auction of GHG Allowances on Wednesday March 22, 2017

Toronto, Canada (January 25, 2017) The Ontario government will be holding its first auction of greenhouse gas (GHG) allowances under the Cap and Trade program on Wednesday March 22, 2017 between 1-4 pm EST.

Auction #1 will hold the Current Auction (2017 vintage emission allowances) and also the Advance Auction (2020 vintage allowances). Both vintages have a reserve price of about CAD$18.10 per allowance. An allowance is 1 metric tonne of carbon dioxide equivalent. Allowances are purchased in lots of 1,000.

The available allowances in Auction #1 are as follows:

Current year 2017: 25,296,367

Future year 2020: 3,116,700

The value of the current year 2017 is $457,864,243. The value of the future year 2020 is $56,412,270.

Mandatory, voluntary, and market participants must submit their intention to participate in the auction by the deadline of Friday February 10, 2017.

Mandatory participants that emit more than 25,000 metric tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalents must have enough allowances to equal their emissions.

Only registered agents, PAR (primary account agent) and AAR (alternate account agent) can act on behalf of a mandatory, voluntary, or market participant in the auction.

Sharolyn Mathieu Vettese, BA is a registered PAR, and Dan Balean, P.Eng. is a registered AAR, and their auction services are available to participants. Allow several days prior to the February 10th deadline to complete the required administrative procedures in order to meet the February 10th deadline.

SMV Energy Solutions is also a registered market participant in the Ontario Cap and Trade program. A market participant can participate in in the auction. Unlike capped mandatory and voluntary participants, a market participant has no emissions compliance requirements, and has no relation with a capped participant.

The Ontario Cap and Trade program was legislated in 2016 to help fight climate change, and reward businesses that reduce their GHG emissions. It is anticipated that 82% of Ontario’s GHG emissions will be captured by the program. Ontario expects the program to generate $1.9 billion annually, which will all be reinvested into initiatives to transition Ontario to a low carbon economy. When California introduced its cap and trade program, the state’s economy and total number of jobs grew more than the U.S. economy.

SMV Energy Solutions provides businesses with services and products that are up-to-date solutions to reduce energy consumption, and carbon footprints as cost avoidance measures. Simple, smart solutions that improve a company’s bottom line.
